Programs and Ages

 

ALL LEARN TO SKATE PROGRAMS REQUIRE PROPER EQUIPMENT
Please refer to "IMPORTANT NOTICES - Find out what you need section" on the first page of the BSC website.
• CSA approved HOCKEY HELMET (with cage for Pre-School, Pre-CanSkate and CanSkate stages 1-3). Helmets must be worn
until the completion of stage 5 (no bicycle helmets).
• Lace up figure or hockey skates with good ankle support (no plastic buckled molded skates)
• Zipped up jacket (preferably no hood)
• Warm nylon mittens or gloves (no hockey gloves)
• Layered nylon pants are best for beginners (preferably no snow pants)

All Burlington Skating Centre programs are held in a beautiful state of the art facility located on ice pad 4 at Appleby Arena.  Group and private lessons are provided by NCCP Skate Canada certified coaches.  Professional coaches are assisted by trained Program Assistants.  Coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, interactive music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment to promote learning.  Throughout the year we offer the following programs;

Pre-School

Ages 3-4

 

This program is an introduction to the ice for children ages 3 - 4 years. Your child must be 3 by the start of the session. Sessions are 30 minutes in length. We teach your child the basics of how to get up and stand off ice. Basics are then introduced on ice; sit, stand, balance. We encourage your child to march on the spot which teaches them to shift their weight from one foot to the other. Your
child will then master the skill of moving on the ice. They will then develop skills such as turning, jumping, gliding, stopping and backward skating. Each child develops at their own pace. Incentives will be utilized. Program is taught by NCCP Certified and trained Professional Coaches. This program plants the roots for lifelong participation in skating while promoting physical fitness. The number
one goal is to have fun while learning! Next level is Pre-CanSkate.

 

16 – 24 Skaters per session
Hockey helmet with full-face mask is mandatory.


 

PreCanSkate Program

Ages 4-5

 

This is an energetic and enjoyable ice skating program for children ages 4 – 5 years. Skaters should be 4 by the start of the session.
Sessions are 45 minutes in length. The goal is to develop stronger basic skills; balance, stopping, turning, jumping, forward and backward skating. Incentives will be utilized. Program is taught by NCCP Certified and trained Professional Coaches. This program is to encourage a lifelong participation in skating while promoting physical fitness. The number one goal is to have fun and develop the many different skating skills to advance to the CanSkate program.

 

The Pre-CanSkate session is broken down the following way:
• 5 minutes warm-up activities this may be off-ice as well
• 30 minutes smaller group instruction, theme day activities
• 10 minutes cool down activities in 1 large group

 

40 – 50 Skaters per session
Hockey helmet with full-face mask is mandatory.


 

CanSkate

Ages 5-14

CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program for children ages 5 – 14 years. Skaters must be five years of age by the start of the session. Younger skaters may be considered if recommended by the Pre-CanSkate Director. Sessions are 50 minutes in length. Taught by NCCP Certified Professional Coaches with the help of trained Program Assistants. This program ensures a 1:10 coach to skater ratio. Your child will learn to complete a series of balance, control and agility skills. Taught in six stages of learning that pertain to figure skating, hockey, ringette, speed skating and recreational skating. CanSkate uses a nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills. Designed to have 90% continuous movement to maximize learning and practice time in a fun and active group setting. Participants earn ribbons and badges starting at Stage 1 and work their way to Stage 6 as they progress through the CanSkate system. Skaters progress at their own rate. Coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment that promotes learning. CanSkate will help participants realize their skating goals.

 

The CanSkate session is broken down the following way:
• 8 minutes on-ice warm up as 1 large group
• 37 minutes smaller group instruction - Balance, Control + Challenge Zone, and Agility station rotations
• 5 minutes large group activity and cool down

 

CSA approved hockey helmets are mandatory for all CanSkaters up to and including Stage 5.

 

 Power Skating

Burlington Power Skating Program focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance skills, all of which are especially important for hockey and ringette players. These sessions are designed for those children who can already skate forwards, backwards and stop. In these classes the skaters will develop better balance, power, agility, speed and endurance, using edges, crossovers, lateral moves, pivot turns, and fast forward/backward starts.

House League Ages 6-8yrs

This program is geared to skaters that can skate forwards and backwards and continue to progress on the fundamentals of skating to prepare skaters to play hockey or ringette. This program focuses on Power Skating skills ie; Forwards & Backwards skating, Stopping, Introduction to Cross-overs & edges, Skating with and controlling a stick. Full equipment is recommended. Hockey equipment should be CSA approved. Let’s learn some new skills and have fun!

House League Ages 9-12yrs

This program is geared to skaters who already have advanced skating skills and will continue to progress on the fundamentals of skating to prepare skaters to play hockey or ringette. This program focuses on Power Skating skills ie; improving Forwards & Backwards skating, Stopping, Cross-overs, strengthen edges, skating with and controlling a stick. Full equipment is recommended. Hockey equipment should be CSA approved. Let’s continue to learn some new skills and have fun!

 

Adult Skate

 

This program introduces adults to an active living lifestyle through progressive skating skills development under the guidance of a certified professional in a FUN group lesson format. The program is flexible enough to accommodate the various proficiency levels and goals of individual skaters. Adults participate in CanSkate, STARSkate and CanPowerSkate programs as well as on synchronized skating teams. Adult championships currently provide opportunities to adult skaters to experience the challenge of a competition in a fun, social environment.
